When were your scales last checked?

Using scales that are not tested periodically with certified weights or calibrated correctly can cost you product, money and your customer.

For Example: - You are using a set of platform scales to weigh up 1 tonne bins of pumpkins, which you sell. Unknown to you the scale has an error causing you to give away 2 kg per tonne. If you weigh up 100tonne (100 bins) per day the following lose would occur per year:- 100t per day x 2kg (error per tonne) = 200kg produce given away per day 200kg per day x 365 days in a year = 73 tonne annually

WHO CAN CHECK AND CERTIFY MY SCALES

A Servicing License from the Office of Fair Trading is required before scales can be certified and a Trade Certification Form and Seal including all correct markings should be issued at the time of Certification. What happens if I don't comply?

If you do not meet the requirements of the Trade Measurement Act 1990, or any of its regulations, you may be issued with an infringement notice and fined up to $450, or face prosecution. If prosecuted for using an inaccurate scale, individuals can be fined up to $20,000 and companies $100,000.
